The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) has selected Penna Powers as its new agency of record for its Utah Cancer Control Program.

The five-year contract coincides with the release of the UDOH and Utah Cancer Action Network’s Utah Comprehensive Cancer Prevention and Control Plan, “the largest formal effort to address the burden of cancer in the state of Utah,” according to Lynette Phillips, program manager for the UDOH Cancer Control Program.

The review committee commented that one of the reasons Penna Powers stood out and was selected was, “Penna Powers provided highly creative materials based on research and evidence-based strategies designed to change behavior.”

Penna Powers’ Social Change department will be leading out on the education and action campaigns for BeWise disease prevention and health promotion, breast, cervical and comprehensive cancer, radon and lung cancer, HPV immunization.

Selected for its science-based approach to behavior change, Penna Powers has been nationally recognized for its work with Zero Fatalities in Iowa, Nevada and Utah, UCAIR and Hold On To Dear Life.

Under the contract, Penna Powers will implement a statewide communication campaign comprised of broadcast, social, news, digital and outreach components to help Utahns locate and participate in the Utah Cancer Control Programs’ cancer prevention, screening and information services.

The Salt Lake Corporate Games is an annual event where companies across Utah gather to compete in various sports, games and activities. While the competition is friendly, top performing teams are recognized and awarded with medals (gold, silver or bronze). Larger companies even compete against each other across all competitions to win the coveted “Corporate Cup.”  Penna Powers’ past pursuit earned us a bronze medal.

This year, our daring and dauntless team tested our mettle against the best Utah has to offer, and things went better than expected.

Though we didn’t win every event we entered, we came away with gold at the trivia contest. While we were sidelined as dodgeball and kickball combatants, we certainly proved that we are first-rate at being chock full of (somewhat) useful information.

The questions covered categories like geography, history or pop culture and ranged in difficulty from things like, “How many gold medals has Michael Phelps won?” (23) to “How many islands make up the island nation of Japan?” (6,852). The corporate games are nearly finished and while we won’t be winning a “corporate cup,” we’re proud to say that Penna Powers is the trivia king.

Meme (mēm): a cultural item in the form of an image, video, phrase, etc., that is spread via the Internet and often altered in a creative or humorous way.

If you want to make a meme that’s more compelling for your audience, dig a little deeper and widen your perception of what a “meme” can be. While this format spreads like wildfire, a little variability will go a long way.

When you make a meme, make sure you are keeping up with popular culture and the changing trends. If you can create a video or image that will speak directly to your audience’s personal life and preferences, your message will be better received. For these particular images, I DO prefer to use the classic “meme” format most of the time.

Come up with a catchy slogan or phrase. I consider myself particularly “punny” (holiday content is my forte), and I will intermittently weave in my humor to even the most serious of pages. In my experience, a bit of comic relief goes a long way in reaching your audience.

Find that perfect image to caption by scrolling through a never-ending feed of photos until your eyes are dry and images of happy drivers and hazy landscapes are forever burned into your brain.

Once you have found the holy grail of iStock images, open it on your favorite phone app or website (my favorites are Font Candy, Adobe Spark Post and Pixlr). Pixlr is essentially a free online version of Photoshop, and is perfect for superimposing seat belts onto Yoda.

Once you have picked your poison and opened your image, double click that text box and type your Oscar-worthy pun. And theeeeeeeeennnnnn… Tap through different fonts, try out new colors, move around your text box, save 793 different images, open them all up on your computer and narrow it down to your favorite choice. Got all that? Good.

Agency note: We tasked our summer media intern with this very important question. Here’s what he found:

In a previous article, I went over video streaming and TV watching. This showed that it’s typical to either stream or watch TV, but not to do both. But as you will discover, radio is different.

Streaming platforms we’ll be exploring:

Who are the audio streamers in the Salt Lake market?

Screen Shot 2016-08-10 at 10.06.01 AMScreen Shot 2016-08-10 at 10.06.12 AM

Pandora skews slightly female and serves an older audience. iHeartRadio also serves an older audience, but is almost evenly split between genders. Spotify, on the other hand, stands out against the other two. Over 65% of its audience is between 18 and 30, and it definitely skews male. I fully expected the younger audience, but I had not anticipated that Spotify users were 21% more likely to be male.

Do music streamers actually listen to the radio?
The answer is yes! The more likely someone is to stream music, the more likely they are to also listen to the radio.

Screen Shot 2016-08-10 at 10.09.56 AM

It’s no surprise that iHeartRadio users are also 84% more likely to be heavy radio listeners.

What is surprising is that Spotify users are 56% more likely to be heavy radio listeners as compared to Pandora users being only 16% more likely.

Why is this?

Pandora functions much more like traditional radio than Spotify does. Maybe Pandora becomes a radio substitute for many listeners while Spotify does not. It’s a question worth exploring deeper.

Most listened to SLC radio stations

I took each streaming platform and looked at the top stations that they prefer to listen to.

Screen Shot 2016-08-16 at 9.19.42 AM

The overlapping stations are KBZN (adult contemporary), KZHT (Top 40) and KSFI (Adult Contemporary). Higher percentages of Spotify users are listening to these stations because of the younger crowd.

Now you know. This information should help with targeting individuals across the streaming platforms and provide perspective on streamers within the Salt Lake City DMA. Do you stream, listen to traditional radio or both? Tell us in the comments!

Fueled by a lifetime supply of Red Vines coupled with the fortitude to survive the Arctic Tundra of our air conditioning, we welcome our two newest additions to the Zero Fatalities Social Change Outreach team. Find out a little bit more about Kylie and Nat’s antics in the ‘Girls’ Corner’ of P2…

FullSizeRender (8)

Kylie Christensen came to us from Saint George, Utah, and travels from school to school teaching and encouraging community members to live the goal of Zero Fatalities on our roadways. When she isn’t with her husband in the mountains: fishing, camping and chowing down on s’mores, you can find her encouraging anyone that will listen to “Buckle up!” or planning her dream trip to Bora Bora. Her favorite words to live by are: “You were born an original. Don’t die a copy.”

Natalie Lovell made the long trek from Murray, Utah to join the P2 team. As the only person on Outreach to work on Truck Smart, you can thank her for teaching community members how to drive safe around big rigs. Even though a fortune cookie told her “You won’t be perfect at anything, so you might as well be mediocre at everything,” she decided to go above and beyond. Her country-loving, chocolate-milk-drinking can-do attitude makes her a great addition to the Penna Powers team!

What is Google Search Console? Formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools, Google Search Console is one of Google’s latest creations that can help you manage and optimize your website. While it is similar in many ways to Google Analytics, Google Search Console is unique in that it focuses primarily on your website’s organic search rankings. Not only is it completely free (much like Google Analytics), but it offers a wealth of information that anyone who is managing a website should take notice of.

what is google search console dashboard

What can Search Console really do?

As stated earlier, Google Search Console essentially monitors your site’s performance in relation to its Google Search results. It can show you exactly what keywords your website is ranking for, how well those keywords are performing (in terms of generating visitors) and even alert you if your website has errors that could be hurting your visibility online. On top of this, you can use Search Console to make sure Google can access your content, submit new content for crawling and even remove content you don’t want shown in search results (you can read Google’s take on it here).

Here’s an example of Penna Powers’ last 28 days of web traffic according to Google Search Console (found under the “Search Traffic” sub menu). As you can see, this incredible tool can show you exactly what search terms are generating leads for your website, how many times your website is seen organically and even the click-through-rate (CTR) for those impressions. This additional information is key for learning which keywords you need to target moving forward as you manage your website.

Search console can also help you discover and correct any crawl errors on your website via the “Crawl” submenu on the left.

How can I start using Search Console?

Getting Search Console for your website (or “property”) is actually incredibly easy. From the main Search Console dashboard you’ll notice an “ADD A PROPERTY” button. From there, you’ll be prompted to submit your website URL. While you can type out your URL directly, I’d recommend using copy + paste directly from your URL bar to make sure you get the URL just right.Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 3.49.03 PM

After you hit “add,” you’ll be asked to verify your website. The simplest way to do this is to follow Google’s instructions and upload your HTML file to Search Console. Even if that doesn’t work, there are alternate methods to verify your ownership (like adding an HTML tag to your website’s code, using your Google Analytics account, etc).

Once your website is verified, you can begin enjoying the wealth of information found therein. When it comes to optimizing your site for search-ability (read: SEO), Google Search Console is an invaluable tool for any webmaster.
